SURTEK has over 40 years of expertise in Enhanced Oil Recovery. SURTEK has been involved in more than 80 field EOR applications and in technology transfer with more than 350 companies from around the world. SURTEK’S EOR database is global, it contains over 2,500 projects implemented as either a pilot or in the field. The data obtained from these experiments has been aggregated into a relational database, providing the opportunity for valuable insight for field operators.

ELIO DEAN

Chief Executive Officer

Elio joined Surtek in 2011. He currently oversees all consulting projects, international relations, and new ventures. Since joining the Surtek team, he has lead or assisted in various projects spanning over 3 continents. Elio speaks 3 languages, English, Japanese, and Spanish. He is highly specialized in Chemical EOR, Gas EOR, Advanced Reservoir Characterization, and Unconventional EOR Evaluation. Elio holds a B.Sc in Petroleum Engineering and a M.Sc in  Energy Economics both from Colorado School of Mines.

MALCOM PITTS, PH.D.

President

Malcolm joined Surtek in 1980. During his tenure, he has designed micellar-polymer, mobility control polymer, alkaline-polymer and alkaline-surfactant-polymer floods for multiple reservoirs with 45 of the designs being implemented in the field. Malcom holds a Ph.D in Chemistry from Georgetown University.

KATHRYN GRABER

Business Manager

Kathryn Graber works as a Business Manager for Surtek, Inc, where she wears many hats as an HR Manager, as the accountant and bookkeeper, and overseer of the day-to-day office workflow. She comes to us with extensive experience in Franchise Management. In her downtime she enjoys playing softball, baking, and reading.

ELII SKEANS

Reservoir Engineer Lead

Elii Skeans works as Senior Reservoir Engineer for Surtek specializing in compositional numerical simulation for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) projects. Elii has worked on world class reservoir studies in the Middle East, South America, Europe and North America and has co-authored multiple SPE publications regarding EOR. With a Master’s Degree in Data Analytics, Elii is passionate about applying big data analytics processes to traditional reservoir engineering problems.

KEN BENSCHING

Lab Director

Ken began working in the Surtek laboratories in 2006 bringing with him an extensive background in core analysis and core flooding with an emphasis on enhanced oil recovery.  Beginning at Marathon Oil Company in the late 1970's, Ken has amassed over forty years of laboratory experience while working with many of the world's largest national oil companies on their own laboratory projects. 

HARRY SURKALO

Surtek Founder

Harry founded Surtek in 1978 and was the CEO until 2016. Harry ensured the engineering and laboratory work conducted by Surtek always had an economic focus for our clients. Prior to Surtek Harry was the department manager for Marathon’s research division where he oversaw the implementation of EOR technologies in the field. A SPE IOR pioneer award recipient, Harry was one of the principal developers of the Alkaline-Surfactant-Polymer (ASP) Process. Harry holds a BS in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering from Pennsylvania State University.

 

HOSSEIN KAZEMI, PH.D.

Reservoir Engineering & Laboratory 

Hossein currently holds the Chesebro' Distinguished Chair Professorship in the Petroleum Engineering Department at Colorado School of Mines and is the Co-Director of Marathon Center of Excellence at CSM. Prior to CSM he was the Director of Production Research at Marathon Technology Center. A SPE IOR pioneer award recipient, Hossein has been front and center in the implementation of several of the world’s most successful EOR projects. Hossein holds BS and PhD degrees in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin

JOHN BARBER

Surface & Facilities

John Barber provides 45 years of insight to SURTEK of experience from the well to the chemical plant. Having worked both domestically and internationally on three sides of the supply triangle - Operator| Supplier | Service Provider; this creates a unique perspective to a customer focused organization like SURTEK. His education started with a degree in Mechanical Engineer from Kansas State University followed by MBA and a Major Oil Company Executive Management program. John's varied experience provides the ability to add value to both executives and field personnel.

BILL O'BRIEN

Reservoir Engineering

 

Bill is a Senior Engineering Consultant with Nitec LLC in Denver, CO. He has enjoyed a 40-year career that spans applied research, engineering/operations, project planning and the reservoir management of US and international assets. His technical interests range from reservoir/production engineering to enhanced oil recovery of conventional and unconventional resources. He holds a bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of Colorado and a master’s degree in petroleum engineering from Stanford University. He has served on numerous committees and is a Distinguished Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

JON PUTNAM

EOR Facility Design and Implementation

John provides Surtek 30 years of experience in chemical EOR projects worldwide, including President of a specialty oil field equipment fabricator, Vice President of a first generation chemical EOR engineering and services company, Director of Technology for a chemical EOR equipment fabricator, Senior Sales Representative, O&G for a global polymer manufacturer, and Project Manager. John has on the ground project design and management experience in North America, Russia, China, India, and Colombia.

JIM CROMPTON

Data Analytics

Jim retired from Chevron in 2013 after almost 37 years with the major International Oil & Gas Company. After moving from Houston to Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jim established the Reflections Data Consulting LLC to continue his work in the area of data management and analytics for the Exploration and Production industry. Starting January, 2018, Jim teaches a new undergraduate level course in “Petroleum Data Analytics” in the Petroleum Engineering department at the Colorado School of Mines. The course is the capstone course for the Data Analytics minor in petroleum engineering. In October 2019, Jim received the SPE’s International Award recipients for Management and Information discipline.

JONATHAN SILVERSTER

Strategic Business Advisor

 

Jonathan is a strategic business advisor for Surtek, helping with both long-term growth and day-to-day operations. He brings 25 years of experience as an engineer, program manager, and strategic business consultant;  working in defense, aviation, and energy industries with the US Army, Boeing, Bell, and McKinsey & Company.  Jonathan specializes in problem-solving and loves developing of new products and streamlining operations. He holds master’s degrees in business, engineering technology, and education.

GLEN BINGHAM

                                               

Business Strategy

Glenn is an expert in strategy and technology with over 40 years of experience in both the public and private sectors. He is the founder of two successful software companies in the travel industry and currently devotes his time to a non-profit humanitarian organization that he founded. He received an MBA from the Harvard Business School and a Post Graduate Diploma in Strategy and Innovation from Oxford University. He was also a CPA.
